Do pattern testers get paid?

Short answer: usually not in cash. The standard compensation across indie sewing pattern testing is a free copy of the finished pattern, and often 1–3 additional patterns from the designer's shop as a thank-you. A small number of established designers offer a small fee or fabric budget, but that's the exception.

What you actually gain: patterns you'd otherwise buy, early access to new releases, a relationship with designers who invite reliable testers back, and — if you share your makes publicly — visibility during the launch.

What designers actually want

• You fit somewhere in their target size range
• Your sewing level matches the pattern (beginner, intermediate, advanced)
• You hit the deadline — usually 2 to 4 weeks
• Clear, structured feedback per section — not just 'looks great!'
• 2–5 finished-make photos with usage rights for launch

Reliability beats sewing years. A tester who delivers on time with clear notes gets invited back forever.

How to find patterns to test

1. 1. Follow designers on Instagram. Most tester calls are posted in stories and grid posts — turn on notifications for designers whose style you love.
2. 2. Join tester groups on Facebook. Groups like "Pattern Testing Community" and designer-specific groups post rolling calls.
3. 3. Get on the Pattern Testers directory. Designers using Pattern Testers can search testers by size, skill and reliability, and invite you directly. Free to join.
