How to gather fabric

Gathering is how a wide piece of fabric is pulled into a narrow one — at a neckline, a waist seam, a sleeve head or a ruffle. The technique is simple; the difficulty is keeping the fullness even and the threads unbroken.

Why it's worth learning

Gathers create volume without fitting. They show up in gathered blouses, tiered skirts, puff sleeves, ruffles and waist seams — and they are far more forgiving of size than darts.

What you'll need

  • Contrasting thread (so you can see the basting to pull it out)
  • A pin to wind the thread tails around
  • Optional: fine cord or dental floss for the cord method

Fabric notes

  • Light fabrics gather into soft folds; heavy fabrics into thick pleat-like bunches.
  • The wider the piece relative to the seam it joins, the fuller the gathers — a ratio of 1.5:1 is gentle, 2.5:1 is very full.

The steps, in order

  1. 01

Lengthen the stitch and loosen the tension

Use the longest stitch your machine offers and drop the top tension a little. Short, tight stitches will not slide along the thread.

  2. 02

    Sew two parallel rows

Sew one row just inside the seam line and one just outside it, both within the seam allowance. Two rows keep the gathers upright instead of collapsing.

  3. 03

Leave long thread tails and don't backstitch

You need to pull these threads. Backstitching locks them and you will have to unpick before you can gather.

  4. 04

    Pull both bobbin threads together

Working from one end, pull the two bobbin threads at the same time, easing the fabric along with your other hand until it matches the length it must join.

  5. 05

Or gather over a cord for long seams

Zigzag over a fine cord within the seam allowance, then pull the cord. It doesn't snap, which makes it far better for a long tiered skirt.

  6. 06

    Distribute the fullness evenly

Quarter both pieces and match the marks, then even the folds out with a pin. Deliberately keep gathers away from an underarm or a centre front where they'd add bulk.

  7. 07

Stitch the seam with the gathers facing up

Sew slowly with the gathered layer on top so you can see the folds, and stop to check nothing has folded back on itself.

Mistakes worth avoiding

Using a normal stitch length

The threads won't slide, and they snap when you pull them.

One row of gathering instead of two

The gathers flop over and the seam looks limp rather than full.

Gathering the whole piece without quartering it

You end up with all the fullness in one half and a flat, stretched section in the other.
